Folly at SET Gallery

My next big art endeavor is building a giant Cocoon. "Folly" will be on display at SET Gallery opening Sunday February 26th at 6pm. The exhibition is up until March 24.
The inspiration for this installation comes from the body's form and structure in a posture abstracted by the fabric cocoon. This iteration will take over this whole window area and 12' into the space. You will be able to walk into, lounge inside of it and experience it. It can be touched and smelled.
A performance-interaction Happening will be scheduled/choreographed for sometime in March.

1. bend the conduit
2. drill the holes in the PVC
3. layout the fabric envelope, 3 sleeves at each foot.
4. thread the conduit, pin to PVC at holes.
5. attach "feet" to wood planks.
6. secure with other blocking.
7. complete the base with the mattress.
8. twist fabric towards specified points on the PVC/conduit framework.
9. Secure with zippers, bungees or safety pins.
10. stretch interactive webs with water jugs and points on the framework.
11. administer smells.

Sherry Aliberti's background in architecture and yoga inspires her to study the body as a structure. The public's response contributes transportive memories and emotional reactions.The role of the performers is to interpret the body’s structural form and power through athletically choreographed or spontaneous postures. Collaborating with dancers and photographers develops the project continually.

Sherry Aliberti has her Bachelor of Architecture from Pratt Institute and uses it to explore this idea of body and structure, curate interactive art events, travel and photograph cities and absorb as much of NYC art and culture as possible.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My background in architecture and yoga inspires me to study the body as a structure. Influenced by Martha Graham, Ernesto Neto and others, a fabric enclosure abstracts the figural form. Structurally, these postures represent a scale model of an architecture and materiality based on the forces of the body. The Cocoon is my performance-installation work which involves physically entering a Cocoon constructed of sheer, stretchy fabric and playing inside. Each one is different in its size, opacity, subtle texture and smells. A collection of them together, for pairs or small groups create an interactive Playground.The Cocoons have been featured at FIGMENT NYC, Art in Odd Places and other NYC art festivals as both participatory and performance art. The public responds with transportive memories and emotional reactions.The role of the performers is to interpret the body’s structural form and power through athletically choreographed or spontaneous postures. Collaborating with dancers and photographers develops the project continually. Past installations have relied on existing structure like sprinkler pipes and stairway banisters to create an interactive environment that visitors must touch and smell. These environments function as colorful static pieces until inhabited by participants. Incorporating lighting effects, projections and other textures further explore an immersive environment. My collages splice Cocoon forms into the cityscape to suggest free-standing sculptures and installations at a large, inhabitable scale. Some are designed as Bathhouses or museums, others as community centers and performance venues.

Why do you make art?

I make art to play with ideas that are hard to grasp in a drawing. I like creating an experience of something temporal in my art. For now it is nothing until someone interacts with it, gets inside to smell and touch and dance. The act of making it is necessary for me, in search of how the body functions as a structure. The ideas I have about architecture must first be worked out as Art. The physical model of the architecture is the performer's use of the fabric cocoon and I design a larger scale of it as a collage, siting the structure in the cityscape. I am working on designing the interiors and floorplans.

i make art to help pursue my design, in its most unrestrained and romantic ability. only the rules the artist makes for herself, must she follow and my rules are based in design principles like gravity and the body, light and color. My art is about an experience, it is interactive. My art involves touching, smelling and playing.

- Why do you make design?

I make design because it is tough to work out all the kinks. it takes a lot of time to fit everything the best way into the constraints. The constraints are my favorite part. Design exists in exploiting constraints and details. Nothing is ever constant, options are almost endless. The challenge is never ending in a motivating way. It must develop fast, it must adhere to a schedule and a budget. It needs a client and it will be built and many people will be paid for the work. Once it's finished, the designer never gets to see it anymore (sometimes.) The scale of design is comfortable in a 3-dimensional way where some aspects must make perfect, dull sense. The ability to Design from start to finish, successfully, comes from hands-on experience. You have to work at being a good designer.

Architecture is at the base of my being. It is what feels right and I want to make crazy, time-stopping structures that appear to be just about to take off in flight or dance, of an exciting color, and with a transportive interior that might be relaxing, energizing or inspiring.

Shortly describe the difference and/or similarities in creative processes.

My design is the result of my process of art. I use art to find what I am trying to design. The similarities involve materials and functionality. Both will be experienced 3-dimensionally. The shapes the body creates are expressive and powerful, even spontaneous. The cocoons and collages can suggest anything, because they are art, while the design in the process of turning them into architecture. Bringing the scale of the body back to the scale of ourselves using this space. This is a new creative process, for design. New questions about material, using concrete and water, electricity and plumbing. The difference is scale. The same is the rigor that it requires to exploit the idea.

Design is a tough creative process, to the point that sometimes the creativity gets driven out of it, or it is presented as routine, as a script. Art can be free-form and romantic; right in an instant. Or not. Both develop over time and practice, need to be worked on with unbridled focus and engulf the creator in details that may or may not be appreciated, if not completely discarded in the next iteration. In architecture, design is sometimes compromised because the architect is so focused on coordinating countless details and people. So many pieces have to come together, and none of them have to be about “good design.” For me, design is about constantly striving to find the best way to frame nothing but an experience of that space.

What is the difference (if any) between art and design for you?

For me, the difference between art and design is gravity, tenure and money. Great art will last forever. Great architecture can and will if you just leave it alone. Something is far more powerful about an actual space, like the Pantheon, that has lasted on the earth for thousands of years. It has long outlived its architects. Something so grand, or smart, that it would persevere through generations of time and at what price of whose cost? Great design dreams of this, while art's dream must be vastly more ephemeral and ideally important immediately. Art has more reputation about it, which is part of the fun. Design is hardly ever allowed to be fun.

"Design" must adhere to rules implied by codes for actual legal permission, etc, to build anything. Every single step costs money and forces a lot of people to get involved, drawing, building, installing, coordinating. Art is allowed less rules, more of a "please don't touch" idea, which i wholeheartedly disagree with. Design, for me at least (i am excluding product designers, fashion designers....) is intended to live beyond 30 years. With any luck, my design will outlast my life to be classified as design, when it was only ever art to begin with, and then what? The similarities, i think are sometimes greater. measuring, studying, analyzing, experiencing firsthand other creations are part of learning for both disciplines. Phenomenal design can be mind-bending, for me, in its ability to suck time and space away, carrying its own soul. Art rarely has that feeling at such a powerful scale.

- Give an approximate estimate in percentage of how much time you spend making design and art.
It is difficult to say. I spend 40 hours a week at my architecture job. I spend all my free time making art. However, in the larger scheme of everything, I feel that the time spent at the architecture job is important experience for the future of my art. Similarly, my art at present takes many forms, whether it's the actual performing of the art or the collecting, analyzing of documentation, collaborating with other artists (including designing interactive art events) and continuing the process of creating an art-design purgatory. Constantly working, I have an installation of giant collage-decals up during January.

schemes for the Cloudhanger

The cloudhanger looks like large dancers abstracted by fabric. It is a freestanding structure that is immersive and sensory. Colorful webbed walls morph with visitor participation. Choreographed performances and public interaction/reaction will be documented but the Experience inside is the art.

The Cloudhanger is an immersive interactive environment for performers and the public to explore. This involves experimenting with structural study models for incorporating a framework into the fabric Cocoons to appear occupied by performers. The moving Cocoon form interrupts and abstracts the projection from the outside while informing the feeling inside the membrane. I will edit abstract videos of animations, scenery and Cocoon performances to project in the space, on the Cocoons and on/inside the installation. I will construct a stand-alone canopy-like sculpture that will continually collect various details of textures, sounds, smells and lighting effects. The installation will serve as an object engaged by both guests and performers. I will document the process of construction and interaction throughout the time spent in the studio. For performers, we will choreograph movements, to be performed, filmed and shown as an instructional video to assist the public's participation. Testimonials of the experiences people have with this piece and performances record reactions and emotions. My strategy is to create a sensory environment that is inclusive and surprising, tactile and moving. Visitors will leave with unique memories informed by projections they watch or that wash over them, things they touch and smell, interactions with a performer inside the installation or with the materials of the environment. The piece can be folded up and moved. MORE

In the future, the Cloudhanger might grow to be constructed out of a metal mesh framework. By layering stretches of plant-covered mesh, different plants (colors and textures) and degrees of transparency will create a pleasant jungle-like enclosure. The green facade can be a canopy for an outdoor space or a separate envelope for a new or existing structure. MORE

get a lot of hits on this site for posting about Gamal. I took his Design 400 class in the Fall of 2006 when I was at Pratt. It was difficult and I enjoyed the challenge. I also think that my class was the last true Gamal class. I'm no expert and clearly, if you peruse anything else on this site, the destructivist style didn't stick with me.

Some rules about your Gamal project:
your drawings better be amazing and you should have a strong concept backing up every move you make. Every piece of your model and line you draw is important. My drawings are not as strong as Gamal wanted them to be. Gamal loved my writing. It's long and stoic but tells an intense narrative.

The trick about "fields" is that you have to think about it as an intersection of planes and walls to create inhabitable spaces. Those spaces are programmed by your narrative, who is this place for? It should be complicated and highly specific. Maybe you want to begin with how and where your occupier goes in this place. In the plan below there are many paths that intersect the ground and the other structure.

The fields are probably easier for you to understand because you make models in the computer. But try to think for yourself. The rendering will help you, things close up are more detailed and brighter, while things farther away fade to black. "Space" is rendered in black, hence those hours you spend coloring in the background. Yes, your strategy for achieving this will be crucial.

Warm up to this short video, somewhere just before the 2 minute mark, we see the same performance up close and personal. With the movement of the performer (happens to be me) and the fabric's tensile reaction and transparency, it feels a lot like what it's like to be inside. The speckled light effects from the sun and leaves make it ephemeral and special. Somewhere otherworldly, or maybe whimsical and isolated, where you can be alone with your thoughts and the daydreams inspired by those patches of light. Imagine being completely overwhelmed by this cathedral-like space, as large and high-ceilinged as an opera house, but you're in a pool of bubbling water with plants and waterfalls.

Steve Tobin's Exploding Earth

I discovered this artist at the Naples Philharmonic Art Museum. He's based out of Pennsylvania and he makes a lot of different types of work with natural materials like glass and clay. His early work in the 70's was called "Cocoons." His obsession involves the scale of the universe and the Big Bang theory, basically all these fireworks in clay represent for him a similar "creation" as the universe's. I can get my mind around this having studied a bit of Ruskin, who felt that nature and the earth was super inspirational, and impossible to ignore. What I really love about Tobin's work is how these little exploded clay pieces have this organic nature about them that is created by a process that is performative. His larger works explode clay originating at 2,000 pounds and he plans to make pieces 20,000 lbs, so big that you can get inside of them.

Why does everyone hate the hospital? As a designer, many of my non-design friends make interesting criticisms of hospitals and predictably blame the designer, in that way that they're telling me because it doesn't make sense and can't you please explain it?

Well I cannot explain it. All I can tell is that this is just another part of the design industry that is outdated. These types of designs come up when there are only so many colors of anti-germ flooring, or the best way to do something with a wall that needs to be bleached once a week is to built it out of concrete block and paint it a nondescript color. That the only furniture in a hospital is ugly because it has to be super durable in many ways, including again, bleach. Is it uncomfortable to sit on? You are also feeling a lot of anxiety when you sit there. It isn't the chair's fault or the designer's. That smell of the hospital? Also something the designer had nothing to do with.

I don't think many designers consider the smell of their spaces ever. I was absolutely patronized when I brought it up in school. However, there are moments in life when people can feel relaxed or at least, less anxious.

In this rendering for a Healing Center, I have included waterfalls because the sound of the water allows for a penetrating calm feeling that is there in the background for the whole time, blocking out any sounds from the urban environment as well as keeping a sense of calm in the building. People can relax because the sound of the water is nice and also because it allows them to breathe, since silence can create more anxiety.

The waterfalls begin inside, where plants contribute to gentle smells. The layout is developed by incorporating something organic into the plan so that there are not hallways of anxiety, where everyone feels they are getting lost and who knows what they might see wheeled around. There is always something else to look at, there are spaces separated by shafts of natural light and green instead of beige door after beige door. The waterfalls can be experienced from outside as well. This is important so that people attribute a very specific feeling with this place. People can come and be around this positive, healing energy without having a reason to go inside. The outdoor spaces are important for patients to heal and have the option to go outside and not feel cooped up.

I have a lot of ideas about how all the considerations of a typical hospital can be incorporated into this design. Much of contemporary design stems from the same old thing with some sort of injection of something fresh, be it a regular office building with a fancy new envelope or residential complex with photovoltaics and green roof landscaping. In this instance, I am calling for both and interrupting the usual layout with an organic experience to break up all that pent-up anxiety.

In the rendering above, this space is a small hospital, maybe not as much a hospital as an outpatient therapy center. I envision the Healing Center to incorporate alternative forms of healing, as many issues considered medical may be intricacies of the psyche that need to be addressed in alternative spaces and activities such a meditation, yoga and swimming. Of course I feel it's necessary to have as many features of the spa as possible: saunas, hydrotherapy, steam rooms and aromatherapy.

this is the video that you can see at any time of day on the outside of the gallery. Inside, there is a much more incredible where a baby splashes through this silver amazingness. It's out of control! Watch closely. Don't you want to be that kid? It's such a fantasy, to play in the silver mercury-like goop. Listen carefully. The viscousness drops and splashes at such a scale its unreal.

"Used by Mintner since the Eighties the motif of the baby becomes a stand in for her fascination with our human search for pleasure."

I love this idea of the human search for pleasure, and how the baby has such insight into that secret.
You can watch this video on the street, it's playing all night long between the scaffolding. Just north of the New Museum on the Bowery.

Magritte kind of Day

I know I hardly ever tell any real personal stories on this site anymore, since I've been focused on the Cocoon Project and other art and architecture research that comes my way. Since having had the summer off, I have read less blogs and gone out and done some real things. NYC has been my home and playground for almost 8 years and I still enjoy getting out and into the city. This site is about my art of course, but the city is a constant source of inspiration and the more time I spend here the more it starts to compound in on itself and ... implode, usually in some intellectual inside joke of the city and its architecture combined with adverts or gossip or those moments "only in NYC." And to put it into context, those are the words the public used to describe their Cocoon experiences for Art in Odd Places.

We started the day here, at the new Cooper Union building, designed by Thom Mayne of Morphosis in 2007ish, a LEED Platinum mass of sculpted mesh appearing to fold and explode. Inside, the great stair goes all the way to the top, aligning with the glazed "tear"in the facade, letting in all kinds of natural light. This is traditionally where my Vayable Architecture Tour of LES ends, but the guy who booked the tour made me think I should give it backwards. (I will not give this tour backwards in the future but it was a learning experience.) Yeji and Evan joined me on the tour.
Did you know that Peter Cooper, the founder of the Cooper Union designed and built the first railroad engine? His wife essentially invented jell-o? And that to this day Cooper Union owns the land under the Chrysler building? Fun facts you learn on my tour.
After checking out this building, we continued down the Bowery to explore Foster's gallery with the elevator, Sperone Westwater, SANAA's New Museum, the Bowery Mission.

We talk about the obvious difference between the contemporary buildings and the existing vernacular.
We took a little jaunt down Bond Street to check out the luxury buildings there like Herzog and de Muron's 40 Bond and interesting United Nude shoe showroom. Rem Koolhaas's nephew is the designer for United Nude, and the shoes are incredible! Point out where CBGB's used to be.
Then we headed eastward to check out the Lower East Side, get a feeling about the Jewish temples and the tenement-feelings of fire escapes and water towers. The reaches of Chinatown. It was also interesting for me because... it was light out.
After the tour was officially over we found a diner right by the Williamsburg bridge (Evan loves diners and coffee) and decided that the three of us should find a cozy bookstore since it was a pitifully gray October day and had been raining and cold all morning. And how sunny and perfect it had been all week!
So we made a bee-line for Storefront for Art and Architecture (still in the mindset of an architecture tour) and the McNally Jackson Bookstore. Here, we thawed out and I investigated a book bringing together BIG Architecture and parkour, which I'm super jealous of, Evan got into a ghetto prince character he wouldn't let go of for days and Yeji found some Sherlock Holmes.
Then we opted to train it up to Chelsea for some galleries. It was a Thursday, which means "free wine at gallery openings," but we still had a few hours to kill before the wine came out. The first gallery we went to was the Cue Art Foundation, where an exhibit by the Oakes Twins was on view. This work blew my mind!

What the Oakes Twins are up to I find particularly fascinating because... it is a new form of perspective to put it just simply. More specifically, they have invented a tool that provides a calculated concavity in both x and y directions to literally trace one eye's view, sliver by sliver, onto the page. With the hand and pen, that is. It is hard to explain, hard to get your mind around, and even after I did it was still interesting to have it come back to get me when we moved on to check out other work.

I think what is the part that makes it accessible is how when drawing any kind of perspective previously, one had to sacrifice either the accuracy of the image's plan positioning or exaggerate in some way, typically using a curved line to represent a straight line. Also, the typical trick to making something appear super-perspectival (as we find in most Escher drawings and even in the best graffiti writers) is to make it an all-inclusive pop-object. And what I think I mean by that is that you never get the feeling you're in it, you're only ever viewing it, and the "in" would have to be creative in the way you construct your vanishing points. The Oakes work, however, by bringing all the corners towards the viewer, essentially allows a straight line to be a straight line on a curved page, achieving both drafted accuracy in plan and the necessary all-ness that the eye can see but is impossible to include in a perspective drawing. These non-trick tricks change everything. It is further made accurate by the "tracing" technique of the tool they've created so that the single eye only needs to focus on what it sees in what seems to be about an inch-wide sliver and translated directly onto the page, like an Egyptian canon.
And to think, we came all the way from standing in front of the Cooper Union's Morphosis building and around and around to Chelsea to see a double-concaved perspective drawing of the same building by graduates of the Cooper Union's prestigious art school.

After spending so much time in the bookshop, Yeji and I made it only along 25th before Evan came back in time for the openings to begin. The one we were all waiting for was at the Pace Gallery, Hiroshi Sugimoto: Surface of the Third Order: Objects and Sculpture. It was so fascinating in its bare-ness. The pieces initially greeting you were tall and shiny, scale-less. Then, the objects that I wanted to be perfume bottles, all lined up on stalky podiums for viewing inside of, where the horizon faded infinitely away.

It was early and the curators were bugging out about how close we were getting to those bottles. The docent in the first room with the first order happened to be wearing these United Nude pumps.

Earlier, upon heading south from Cooper Union, across 6th street is the Cooper Squire Hotel, a swanky white and glass building. Super skinny, this hotel has a fantastic curtain wall angled in all kinds of exciting cantilevers that reveal exactly how a curtain wall is contsructed for me to point out. Also, it has great spider mullions, which are what this shoe initially reminded me of, although it is inspired by and constructed with furniture hardware. I did share this information about this shoe when we walked by, because I knew we would also pass the shop. I had never expected the shoe finding us in the Pace Gallery. It was then that I decided that the day was Magritte-ing.

By then Yeji's jetlag killed her and she left us to our own devices, namely finding more wine and art. Richard Pousette-Dart: East River Studio found us. Really good. Nearby we hit Freddy Chandra: Synthetic Resonance at Margaret Thatcher Projects, which seemed to me like horizontal stripes of delicious candy to lick.

Anyway, it was a little inappropriate but the depth of the 3-form sort of back-painted acrylic just tasted like candy with my eyes. Chandra, whoI talked to briefly, is inspired by Flavin and Judd. Having just returned from the DIA, Evan and I had also been inspired by Flavin and Judd, Judd especially. Judd's pieces also revealed to me the relevance of not touching the art, as I loved the monolithic green acrylic with metal tunnel floating within. The lack of fingerprints made the difference between powerful sculpture and coffee table.
The rest of the night went as usual, back in the LES.

To make matters worse, there had been a portrait of Duchamp tucked into the corner of the back room, where I can only imagine the surface that turns into infinity comes... something pure, simple and calculated.

Days like these happen once in awhile, where everything comes back together in some way, or that everything happens all at once and it takes all day to follow through. I live for days that run on their own fuel and I run along trying to catch up and end up celebrating getting it all done with another adventure.

AiOP Cocoons Sunday: in the dark, making light

Photos by Steve Aliberti. The Sojourn is a ritual to honor the sunset. Making it to the Hudson River Park in time for the light to change, the Cocoons make a transformation. Inside the big green Cocoon (almost not a Cocoon anymore it's so large) we play with light. Feels super fun to be inside of, and a well-earned experience after a day of performing on 14th street. Fascinating photos that reveal something wonderful, but still nothing like reality. Something you must see for yourself, or better yet, get inside of!

not a big fan of the newer highrise to the left of the Standard. It blocks the Standard, which has more detail in its design.

This was a concept I used in architecture school, especially because it works! Also a strategy to create an interesting, living textured surface. Just add an interesting form! Here is a proposal for converting an abandoned edge on Huron Street in Greenpoint into a public green space for a flea, bandstand or market. So why is it green? Because it's covered in ivy and leaves!

At my former office, I researched a lot of manufacturers or companies that do green roofs, photovoltaic roofs and panels, vertical green facades. One that I absolutely love is Carl Stahl DecorCable, especially their "Facadescape."

It always comes back to the construction of a framework and then how to create the "web". By layering stretches of plant-covered mesh, different plants (colors and textures) and degrees of transparency will create a pleasant jungle-like enclosure. Incorporating water features like ponds and waterfalls can cultivate an entire ecosystem while maintaining water management including storm- and waste-water reclamation. The Living Machine is a series of natural filtration tanks that waste water can move through and become clean enough as "gray water" to be used for things like flushing toilets and hosing stuff down. The "filters" in this system consist of types of plants, microorganisms (like algaes) fish, gravel that make up a series of wetlands or containers that the water cycles through.
The green facade can be a canopy for an outdoor space or a separate envelope for a new or existing structure.SHERRY ALIBERTI 2011

Instead of going straight to FNO, I was convinced to step into some galleries when they opened for the fall in Chelsea.
I didn't expect to witness this incredible piece of art's happening. SUBMERGED by Eunsu Kang and performance by Diana Garcia-Snyder.

Between this and Nick Cave, it was super fun and far more interactive than I expected.

Needless to say, this video hardly does justice to the actual witnessing of this, or any performance especially one that involves light effects. It seems that performance art might be the last thing that people have to experience in person, not to say that social media doesn't help spread the word, but nothing compares to the real experience.

This was a fantastic international group show bringing together the work of many political artists and collectives. Presented in the historic Essex Market, I found it to be an inspiring counterpoint to the whole #OccupyWallStreet pandemonium. Every occupier should have done a bit of "research" by taking in this exhibition because the 9 curators basically did all the work for them and presented it in such a transparent way that it is a library in itself, across cultures and time.

this show was so well-organized, even though it seems to have been such a collective effort that the public were asked to submit suggestions of art to the curators.

this amazing furry lounge area was one of my favorite things, obviously. Thousands of clumps of fabric and yarn to relax on. It was so densely piled, the most incredible feeling of almost floating. "The Future Belongs to Ghosts." I believe the woman in the center may be the artist.

Something great about this group of muses is how they spanned out from 8th almost to 9th, creating an installation that stretched almost 50 feet as people moved down the sidewalk and interacted with each cocoon separately. "Oh another one!" they would say.

This day was pretty fun and absolutely off-the-cuff. I'm really glad we went out though, because the public is different every day and time on 14th street. The light this day was incredible, and it was cool enough that Sylvana and I were able to start in Union Square and get almost to 8th avenue in 3 hours of cocooning. Most of the interactions are yet to be seen!

Cocoon Sojourn for Art in Odd Places

This is a ritual to honor the sunset. the Cocoons start the journey at avenue C and 14th street at noon and move west across the island.
The Ceremony at sunset is open for all to participate. 5:30-7:30 in the Hudson River Park at 14th street.

The first part of the piece is performative, as the Cocoons interact with the public along 14th street, engaging props of the city: scaffolding, telephone booths and more as the performer creates a moving, shifting sculpture for the public to observe and interact with. Each performer brings their own character to the Cocoon.

The other part of the piece is interactive, as everyone gathers to celebrate the sunset and experience the Cocoon as the light changes. Everyone is welcome to participate! Please try to come out for this ceremony and explore the Cocoons. There will be almost 10 Cocoons to play inside of and experiment with flashlights and glowsticks and whatever light-up props you want to bring to make this even more interactive.

this is a proposal for gowanus ballroom. the cloudhanger can go anywhere but here is a good place to start. the cloudhanger is the next phase of the cocoon project that I'm writing submittals and grants for...

The Cocoon is a living, morphing sculpture created by the body. Each Cocoon assumes a personality and character. For this performance at the Gowanus Ballroom between 5 and 8 performers will take over the gallery and its visitors for about 20 minutes. It will be interactive.

The Cocoons will inconspicuously assume sculptural positions throughout the first floor of the gallery. Incorporating music and lighting, visitors will realize the Cocoon performance has begun once the Cocoons begin to move, exploring the environs of the gallery and the people gathered there. Projections and metalworks are free game to interact with. The music captures the attention of the crowd and maintains focus as the Cocoons perform and move about the space. The Cocoons must explore both areas of the lower gallery and then move to the upper gallery, where large projections wash over them with abstract colors, textures and feelings of place. Here, the music and dance culminate into a Ritual of Energy. Recorded sounds and effects, a beating drum and all the movement from the projections explodes into darkness and silence. The true end of the piece is the sound of the zippers, as performers shed the Cocoon and disappear into the crowd before the regular lights resume.

Always wait for the crosswalk when crossing the street, Cocoons. try to cross with others in case of cars making turns. the cocoons are seeking out nooks and crannies of public space. It's all over the place. Don't stop at the hazy thresholds of private space, everything is there for you right now, all of 14th street. The bus stops, the phone booths, the lightposts. Railings, subway stairs, city sculptures in plain sight (and by that i mean touch) like this character. Make it yours.

there was scaffolding up around McQueen and more stores on the north side. i want to perform all over these cobbled streets but I had not envisioned Cocoons and McQueen and scaffolding.
This is the final stretch, and exact location of the sunset ceremony. bring flashlights, blinkies and other things that make light with batteries to play with inside the cocoons.

What the neighbors do

My neighbors are Ryan and Rose and Jon and also Sebastian and Maru, but then there is the neighborhood itself at different scales. To the front of the house, the repair shop guys with a boat docked in the yard and their mariachi music ending their workday most days. In the backyard, I never see anyone in my building or right next door. A couple neighbors have swimming pools.
Beyond the Verizon parking lot, there is a school building near the Ballfield.

Cocoon Dance Studies

The dancerly aspect of this project has been what's missing. Not that I am satisfied with these studies, it is a step in a direction that will no doubt generate phenomenal shapes.

Second this sculptural movement exploration, where it stems from initially and incorporates projections. Last but not least, the playground iteration where everyone is welcome to participate.
I hope to see them all come together in some architectural way.

although many people despise Gehry'a building here on the west side, I don't mind it so much at this point in the night, when the sun starts to go down and it glows so nicely. In NYC there is an extra aspect to a sunset, where after the sun's set which is beautiful and can be experienced across the city (especially from my rooftop in Brooklyn) it is followed by the lights all coming on in the buildings...

These photos of the Cocoons on the Highline are some of my favorites. Staging a performance, at this amphitheater was fun and took advantage of the intriguing levels of the Park. An excellent spot to be isolated from the traffic of the main path while still exhibiting the "show" to both the street below and the Highline just above, to the north, and those in the amphitheater. Anyone on the Highline passing by from the south could potentially miss the performance. Alas, none of my photographers were able to get the shot from the street up at the performance in the window.

however, another image I was trying to get was essentially an urban collage that was also an architectural grotesque, with the Gehry and Nouvel buildings beyond. Many architects do not like this building of Gehry's. Maybe they'll like something of mine better.

In Tube, Everybody will be changed as a Dancer!

"Space Tube is not only a space to take a balance away from the participants, but also to give a beloved feeling to them, because always their movements decide the shape of Space Tube. We can't find this kind of experience in our modern architectural society any more.

In Space Tube, at first everybody lose a posture soft, secondly they try to get back it desperately. Its ways how to get back a posture are very different for them, so its experiences are very interesting and funny not only for them but also for visitors.

In short, the person who throw out his body naturally and make one unity with Space Tube as a given environment is expert. In that time Space Tube also support them using by the storong repulsions from the bottom and the sides with flexibility.
The participants, slowly, go ahead in the space tempted a beloved feeling and be able to try to make the several fluid postures like a fish, like a space walk, like a fetus, and like a unknown animal based on the basic postures of standing, sitting and lying as a human, and enjoy it heartily with something sweet memories."

The High Line Ambush

I've said it since it opened, the Highline is my favorite place in the city. It was natural, then to schedule a Cocoon Ambush for this super public park. The exact site is the 10th Avenue Gallery, where the Highline steps down to an amphitheater enclave to reveal a view right on top of 10th Avenue. It's a great place to sit and see what happens.

I've started a Group on Facebook. Yeah it's like a gang only not in real life. Which that's a lie also. It's the hugest asset so far in collecting the incredible performers who are creating this project with me. Starting with Melody Kology I'm introducing some of these excellent Cocoons.

WHAT is it?

Union Square is a very dense part of town. There are stacks of commotion, from the 6 trains that pass through as well as the nature of shops that criss cross its sides, these boundaries of completely other neighborhoods.
A joint of the city.
The shopping centers surrounding the periphery have excellent views out over the park and everything below.
It collects special characters of all types.
The Cocoon is becoming one of them.

Forced to Pose captures the Cocoons in an almost static installation. Caught up in the staircase at Jeanne D'Arc Residence, the colorful Cocoons stretch between floors and through banisters, brightening an otherwise unnoticeable part of moving through the building. Smells, organic shapes and bulges accentuate the layers of fabric translucencies while pockets of expressive light add a sense of energy. Paradoxical elements of the Art Installation and its Site require it to still be touched. A projection of Cocoon Playground accompanies the installation.

the "village" of 14th street

I have always had an exceptionally high amount of "New York City" moments on 14th street. Those moments where the pure nature of an urban environment requires perfect strangers to interface with one another, and unintentionally but necessarily let their guards down. People are real with one another in a way that reminds me that NYC is still a village. The village works by relying on its citizens to keep it together and pick up the pieces... when they themselves burst it apart. (to simplify greatly.)

Art in Odd Places really brings these ideas together, and I really love being a part of something celebrates what is almost a Bermuda-triangle of the city.
